COMMUNICATING THE WISDOM THAT'S CHANGING THE WORLD
| ||||||||||||
Editor's Desk:Synchronicity Strikes Again By Justine Willis Toms New Dimensions recently received the following letter from Australia. I know this represents only one story of the many that can be told about the magic of radio, and how it continues to connect us all to a larger whole. From Ingrid Burkett, Queensland, Australia I'm writing to you from a little village called Mt. Nebo, in Queensland Australia. I'm a puppeteer and community artist and had a remarkable experience last month on the way to perform at a big folk festival here in Queensland. Our cooperative worked for nine months last year on a project called the 'Global Grandmothers' - making four giant grandmother puppets (between 4 and 6 metres tall) as a celebration of grandmothers and older women in our community and around the world. Our four grandmothers represented different parts of the world (we hope to grow the number of grandmothers to seven over the next year) Together with our band the grandmothers paraded the festival, dancing, processing, embracing people and meditating as we played music and a sound track which included twenty stories of our grandmothers-some sad, some happy, some funny-and little snippets about the sorts of grandmothers we would all like to be. We had worked hard on these puppets during the year and on the two hour drive up to the festival (this was to be their debut performance) my husband and I turned on the radio. What should be on the radio but a program where Sharon Mehdi was being interview by Justine Willis Toms on New Dimensions. In the interview they shared the reading out loud from the book The Great Silent Grandmother Gathering. We had never heard of Sharon or her book before this... but it was just the most amazing coincidence that, as we were going to present our grandmothers for their first public performance, we heard of this wonderful book and all the ripples it has created around the world. My husband and I were transfixed by the coincidence and by the program... we laughed and cried, and I think the experience (which we later shared with all the coop members) really transformed our performance at the festival. We were truly inspired. Thank you Sharon Mehdi so much for your book (I've now ordered it) and New Dimensions for the radio program you did - in which you actually read the book. You can also find us on the web at: www.upatreearts.org - unfortunately we don't have the grandmother photos up there yet, but we're working on it. Thanks again Sharon and New Dimensions. We are sending you many, many good wishes for your continuing inspiration. With best wishes, Ingrid. From the outer landscape to the inner one, Whyte takes us on a poetic journey of the soul. He describes the Irish culture as one that refuses to choose one context over another. He says, "One of the useful things about the Irish psyche, or the Celtic psyche you could say including Scotland, Wales and Brittainy is that it refuses to choose one context over all the others. It is always about not choosing, but holding different worlds together. I think that is very useful for the post modern world where our focus is so fragmented. Whereas the old native Celtic tradition would tell you that you can actually hold many different things together, but you must have a deep interior focus in order to actually do it. You must have an internal foundation which is able to anchor you in the world while you are involved in all of these different layers and levels." He tells the story of the Tuatha Dé Dannan who are supposed to have lived betwixt and between things and how, in the Irish myth, they turned sideways and disappeared. Whyte encourages us with his storytelling and poetry to live in the world without engaging in conversations that make you too small for yourself; to not be pinned down by the names others put on us or, we put on ourselves. David Whyte is a poet who's poetry reflects a living spirituality and a deep connection to the natural world. He is one of the few poets to take his perspectives on creativity into the field of organizational development, conducting workshops with many American and international companies. He is the author of five books of poetry, as well as two nonfiction books on the transformative power of poetry, The Heart Aroused: Poetry and the Preservation of the Soul in Corporate America (Currency 1994) and Crossing the Unknown Sea: Work As a Pilgrimage of Identity (Riverhead 2001) Where Many Rivers Meet (Many Rivers Press 2001), Everything is Waiting for You (Many Rivers Press 2003) and River Flow: New and Selected Poems 1984-2007 (Many Rivers Press 2007). We've decoded the human genome. We can clone all kinds of creatures, and infuse a tomato with a fish's genes. But how much do we really know about life and its origins? We can travel to Mars and count the stars in other galaxies, but do we really understand black holes and the big bang? Dr. Manjir Samanta-Laughton says the big questions of science remain unanswered. Her work lies at the cutting edge of physics, at the nexus of science and spirituality. Where other scientists look for data to support their theories, she lets the data inform hers-and finds evidence of the sacred everywhere she looks. "Creation is happening all the time," she says, "at every single level, every level of the universe, from the galactic super massive black hole to our atoms, to our chakras-every single level has infinity at the center, and is bringing in light from infinity to what we call 'this world.'" Dr. Samanta-Laughton's enthusiasm is matched only by the fascinating possibilities she describes in an interview you'll be talking about for days. After all, if God is emerging through the nearest black hole, surely there's hope for our beautiful little planet. Manjir Samanta-Laughton, M.D., trained as an energy medical consultant as well as a medical doctor. She has worked as a general practitioner at the Bristol Cancer Help Centre, a complementary cancer care center in the United Kingdom, and in her own holistic healing practice. Her quest for the scientific basis of healing led her to study theoretical physics, the science of consciousness, and cosmology. She is sought after worldwide as a lecturer, and is the author of Punk Science: Inside the Mind of God (O Books 2006). We go to workshops. We read good books. We sit on our cushions and meditate. We listen to New Dimensions broadcasts, all in hopes of finding peace, an end to suffering... enlightenment. Why does it all seem so complicated? Spiritual teacher Gangaji says, quite simply, it’s not. "We have very developed, evolved brains," she explains, "and they have an enormous capacity for complexity. And that's beautiful. There's nothing wrong with that. But it can be a trap. In our minds, in our capacity to discriminate and to remember a past and to project a future and to have opinions and judgments, there is generally an overlooking of what’s always here." With her quiet grace, Gangaji invites us to move beyond the complications, beyond the mental chatter and the emotional turmoil, and discover what lies beneath it all. In this inspiring conversation, she helps us recognize the constant presence that is our truest self, where we can find true love and joy at any moment. And yes-it really is that simple. (Hosted by Justine Willis Toms) Born in Texas and raised Mississippi, Gangaji's search for fulfillment ended in India in 1990 when she met her spiritual teacher, Sri H.W.L. Poonja, himself a student of Sri Ramana Maharshi. Now Gangaji teaches throughout the United States and in Europe, holding retreats and gatherings for spiritual seekers of all faiths. Her books include The Diamond in Your Pocket: Discovering Your True Radiance (Sounds True 2007) and You Are That (Sounds True 2007). In Charles Darwin's The Descent of Man, the term "survival of the fittest" appears twice, and one of those entries is an apology for the other. The word "love" appears ninety-five times. Darwin writes about moral sensitivity ninety-two times, and about mind and the brain two hundred times. With this discovery, Dr. David Loye identified Darwin as an early humanistic psychologist, and even finds a scientific foundation for the appearance of Jesus. And yet, this important part of Darwin's work remained hidden for more than one hundred years. In this deeper understanding of the work, Dr. Loye finds clues to solving the political, cultural, and environmental devastation he sees in the world today. He points to Darwin's insights and tells us, "What it is saying over and over again is, if we live by these precepts that come out of all this work-love, moral sensitivity, education-if we do all these things, we don't need more research. If we simply do all these things, we have a chance. If we don’t, we're not going to make it. We’re facing the wipe-out of our humanity." David Loye, Ph.D., is a psychologist, systems scientist, evolution theorist, and cofounder of the General Evolution Research Group and the Darwin Project, and with Riane Eisler of the Center for Partnership Studies. For the past twenty years he has worked with other scientists from around the world in development of the new fields of evolutionary systems science, chaos and complexity theory, and in studies of Darwin's life and works. Dr. Loye is the author of twenty books, including Darwin's Lost Theory: Who We Really Are and Where We’re Going (Benjamin Franklin Press 2007) and Bankrolling Evolution: Money, Politics, and Science (Benjamin Franklin Press 2007).
