When Pico Iyer was just seventeen he met the Dalai Lama for the first time, an experience that impacted the rest of his life. Now this Oxford scholar has turned that early fascination into an in-depth study of the inner and outer life of one of the world's great spiritual leaders. In this interview he shares details of the Dalai Lama’s daily routine, his humor, and the reasons why he really is "just a simple Buddhist monk." Mr. Iyer paints a picture of a man of great paradox, a meticulous scholar with deep humility as well as great political insight, with a self-proclaimed addiction to BBC World News and an all-encompassing love and respect for animals. He identifies the qualities that make the Dalai Lama one of the most beloved teachers of our time when he says, "He speaks at many different levels, according to the levels of his listeners, so a little child will hear one thing and a sophisticated philosopher will hear another. At every point he cuts to the root of things, and doesn't allow himself to really be diverted by the never ending drama of change and the roller coaster of moment by moment sensations. That's one of the great things he brings to the world." Educated at Eton, Oxford, and Harvard, Pico Iyer taught writing and literature at Harvard before joining Time in 1982 as a writer on world affairs. He is a prolific writer who since 1980 has written up to a hundred articles a year for more than a hundred magazines and newspapers. He has written a film script for Miramax and initiated the Hart House Lecture Series at the University of Toronto. In 1995 Utne Reader named him one of one hundred visionaries worldwide who could "change your life." He is the author of two novels and seven non-fiction books, including The Lady and the Monk: Four Seasons in Kyoto (Vintage 1992) and The Open Road: The Global Journey of the Fourteenth Dalai Lama (Knopf 2008). It's been a long, long time since a prophet handed down a sacred revelation to humankind. But that doesn't mean God has stopped talking to us. According to Reverend Michael Dowd, God now speaks to us through science, and facts are His native tongue. With a worldview that bridges the divide between science and theology, Reverend Dowd sees each new discovery as a message from Spirit, and evolution as a beautiful unfolding of sacred creation itself. He calls that world view "evolution theology," and describes it as "a way of seeing the universe's story as sacred. When we use the word evolution, what we mean is the history of cosmos, earth, life, and humanity as one sacred story, one meaningful mythnot 'myth' as an untrue story but as a narrative that puts us in accord with the universe, or helps us feel our connection to the whole." In this provocative dialogue he demonstrates how we can see ourselves in the context of space and timenested within the whole of the universe on a continuum of evolving speciesin order to gain new understanding of our failings as well as our divinity. Michael Dowd holds a Masters of Divinity degree, is an ordained Christian minister, and former Baptist and United Church of Christ pastor. He has served on the boards of the North American Conference on Christianity and Ecology; the Ohio Conference United Church of Christ Integrity of Creation, Justice, and Peace task force; and the Hudson Valley Sustainable Communities Network. Reverend Dowd now travels the United States giving talks and workshops on a sacred view of evolution. He is the author of Earthspirit: A Handbook for Nurturing an Ecological Christianity (Twenty-Third Publications 1991) and Thank God for Evolution: How the Marriage of Science and Religion Will Transform Your Life and Our World (Council Oaks Books 2007). Many of us grew up with a strong impression of God as being scary, angry, one who punishes, created hell, or one who asks us to give up our dreams. We are given images of a stern father, but not a nurturing Mother. Later in life many of us rejected the belief in God, only to replace it with an understanding of God as a creative force that got everything rolling; one who set up cosmic laws, but who is impersonal and has left us on our own. But who among us has not longed to hear God's voice, has not longed to talk with God as we once did, when we were children? Michael Prosser encourages us to establish a personal relationship with God, using the form with which we can most easily relate. "They say in near death experiences that often people will see the God of their religion, so a Native American might see their animal guide, people often see Jesus or Mary, people who are Hindu talk about seeing Shiva, so it makes sense that God would show up in a way, in a face, that we could recognize... God is God, of course we can't define God... God is so big, so vast, so indescribable, so if it helps to make your own God form, your own God head, to have an archetype that speaks to you, and allows you to connect, do it. But do it in a way that honors yourself, and honors how incredibly precious you are in that relationship." (Hosted by Justine Willis Toms) Michelle Prosser holds an M.A. degree in communication studies, and is President of Energy Focus Coaching and Consulting. She works with organizations and individuals to reach goals and manifest a better life. Before becoming a coach, Prosser worked for twenty years in government and politics, including leadership positions for three Virginia governors and a congressman. She is the author of Excuse Me, Your God Is Waiting: Love Your God, Create Your Life, Find Your True Self (Hampton Roads Publishing 2008). Topics Explored in this Dialogue:

You're doing your part. You've replaced all your incandescent light bulbs with CFLs, recycle your plastic and paper, and carpool whenever possible. But even if everyone on the planet does those things, according to Chuck Burr, it won't keep us from running out of water and food. Even when we factor in the best our green technology has to offer, at our current rate of consumption the human species will deplete our planet's ability to sustain us within a few generations. Solutions exist, but they require learning to see our relationship to the earth and her resources in a radically different way. Mr. Burr explains, "We need to indigenize the white man. We need to go from 'the earth belongs to man' to 'man belongs to the earth.' It's that simple. As long as we keep consuming, it makes programs like recycling pointless. We need to wake up regarding the limits of our bioregion, and also as a spiritual awakening." He brings us a host of intriguing ideas that will change the way you think about "being green," and at the same time offer a new understanding of this beautiful planet and our relationship to it. Chuck Burr is a certified permaculture designer, a retired software entrepreneur, and a cultural creative. He developed a knowledge base called Evolving Culture based on his review of hundreds of books, articles, and reports and thousands of websites about the state of our culture and environment. He serves on several nonprofit boards, and is the author of Culturequake: The End of Modern Culture and the Birth of a New World (Trafford 2007). Topics Explored in this Dialogue:
