From the Editors Desk

After hearing our recent program with Deena Metzger entitle: A Healing Alliance with Animals and the Earth (#3314) we received an email from a listener in Australia. Here is what she wrote:

Some years ago, I rescued a "wild" male kangaroo from a fence. We got him onto the truck and took him home, as it was late. I fed and watered him. All this time he was understandably defensive and aggressively warning me to keep my distance (they have in our country been shot at most of their lives in so many areas). Next morning, I went in, he was at first the same, then he stopped, looked at me, reached out and took my hand in both of his and licked it for having helped him. In that instant, something happened that I shall never forget—an understanding of how we are all just species on this great spaceship called Earth. A vision came into my mind of the Sistine Chapel and of Michelangelo's painting of the finger of God reaching out to mankind. The kangaroo had to overcome his great fear, realize that this was different, decided to want to thank me, and do it in the best possible way he knew.

Our kangaroos are at great risk, in our country, being targeted by those who kill them for profit or to get them out of the way. I went on to raise some orphaned ones and know just how marvelous they are. There are many of us fighting to try to save them. And now we hear that our koalas are at risk of extinction.

When will mankind learn?

EXPLORING NATURE’S WILDNESS IN THE CITY with LYANDA LYNN HAUPT
Program #3322 - Buy Now ($1.99/MP3 Download)
Full Program Description

Topics Explored in this Dialogue:
  • The difference between wildlife and wild life
  • How you can renew your connection to the natural world, no matter where you live
  • Why crows are associated with death
  • How crows hold funerals for other crows
  • How you can let go of guilt and become a joyful ecologist

"There are times when our guarded separateness from the nonhuman world breaks down, and it's a moment of grace." It is through such grace-filled moments, that we rediscover our intimate connection with the natural world, whether we're walking a remote forest path or watching the crows dance outside the kitchen window.

Lyanda Lynn Haupt invites us to revisit that connection every day—through a simple awareness of the living world around us, and of the impact our households and our urban lives have on the nonhuman community in which we live. She explains that true ecology means not only appreciating and caring for the wild lands, but also cultivating a more conscious way of living wherever we find ourselves.

She says, "When we think of nature as the pristine place we go to and then return from, the implication is that what we do when we get home doesn't matter because we're not in nature anymore. But we're intimately involved in the more-than-human world at every moment. That can be enlivening and enchanting."

Lyanda Lynn Haupt has created and directed educational programs for Seattle Audubon, worked in raptor rehabilitation in Vermont, and as a seabird researcher for the Fish and Wildlife Service in the remote tropical Pacific. She is the author of numerous articles and three books, including Rare encounters with Ordinary Birds (Sasquatch 2001) and Crow Planet: Essential Wisdom from the Urban Wilderness (Little, Brown 2009). CHANGING THE WORLD, SEVEN BOYS AT A TIME with MICHAEL ROSEN
Program #3320 - Buy Now ($1.99/MP3 Download)
Full Program Description

Topics Explored in this Dialogue:
  • What holds underprivileged young people back even more than racism and poverty
  • How our society ignores the issue of class
  • How love, trust, and commitment can change the course of a life
  • Why baseball depicts both compassion and rankism
  • How south Florida became a dream journey

Following the lead of his racially color-blind son, Michael Rosen and his wife found themselves adopting a group of underprivileged African American boys within the context of their very privileged Caucasian world. What began as a kids' baseball game in the park, became a commitment that would bridge the racial and cultural divide, introducing the youngsters to Nintendo, their first dinner at a nice restaurant, a book store, and ultimately providing the guidance and support to get them into college.

Not surprising, the Rosens gained as much as they gave, including an education in the real impact of racial and socioeconomic discrimination. Dr. Rosen explains, "I don't understand what needs to be done to change this massive level of oppression. But I do know that unless there are types of mentoring where people reach across those divides, then that very tragic aspect of our society is never going to change."

This tender story of how one family grew to hold the dreams of young men, who might never have escaped that oppression, will bring you a new perspective on what's possible, when we live as though everyone really does deserve an equal chance to succeed.

Michael Rosen holds an M.S. in social anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania, and an M.B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from its Wharton School. He has been a real estate developer and investor, a C.E.O. on Wall Street, an assistant professor at New York University, and is now a community organizer. He is the author of Turning Words, Spinning Worlds (Routledge 2000) and What Else but Home: Seven Boys and an American Journey Between the Projects and the Penthouse (Public Affairs 2009). TOWARD A MORE CONSCIOUS ECONOMY with DAVID KORTEN
Program #3325 - Buy Now ($1.99/MP3 Download)
Full Program Description

Topics Explored in this Dialogue:
  • Why concentrating wealth in the hands of a very few people is a threat to democracy
  • How the recent spiritual awakening may affect our economy
  • Why most of us pay a price when the stock market goes up
  • How Business and spirituality are connected
  • What might have happened if two trillion dollars had gone to citizens instead of banks

Many of us are still reeling from the recent economic meltdown. In the face of so much uncertainty, it's difficult to make sense of the multitude of analyses and predictions about what's to come. What does it all mean in the context of the broader shifts in global culture and consciousness? At last there's a voice of reason that brings not only sanity but consciousness to a real understanding of how our economy works—and why it often doesn't—and how we can apply principles of spirituality and conscious living to the choices we must make for our own financial survival.

David Korten understands the economy, and he also knows that money is not all it's cracked up to be—we really can be happy with very little, after all. But he explains how we can use the money we do have, as an instrument for the change we seek, and to strengthen the communities that really are fundamental to our happiness. He tells us, "The happier societies are those in which there is a more equitable distribution of wealth. Not only happiness, but physical and mental health are higher in those societies, including for people at the top. We need to be rebuilding our communities and our economies from the bottom up."

David Korten holds an M.B.A. and a Ph.D. from Harvard Business School. He is president and founder of the People Centered Development Forum, chair of the board of Yes! magazine, and serves as a board member of the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies. He is the author of several books including Agenda for a New Economy: From Phantom Wealth to Real Wealth (Berrett-Loehler 2009). TAPPING THE WISDOM OF THE WORLD'S ANCIENT ORACLES with NICKI SCULLY
Program #3319 - Buy Now ($1.99/MP3 Download)
Full Program Description

Topics Explored in this Dialogue:
  • How you can access vast resources of ancient wisdom
  • Why Egypt is an important source of wisdom
  • Why using more than one oracle can help you gain broader perspective on issues you face
  • How you can use your breath to draw in the power, vitality, and intelligence of earth and sky
  • What trouble you may have, if you don’t approach an oracle with respect and an open heart

This is a fascinating sojourn into the world of oracles, from direct contact with the ancient Egyptian Thoth and Seth to the various cards and divination tools you use at home. Nicki Scully is one of the best loved guides who works with oracles, deities, and shamanic wisdom, and through her many visits to the sacred sites in Egypt, she has developed a deep relationship to the gifts and powers each of us can access through prayer, meditation, divination, and alchemy.

Perhaps her own greatest gift is her ability to lead us to our personal alchemical wisdom, as she reminds us that these powers are not the sole province of an elite group of practitioners. Oracular wisdom is available to anyone with a sincere desire to develop their own ability to see more, and know more through a connection to the divine.

She explains, "An oracle is one who has the capacity to move beyond the limitations of our rational mind, and move into the intuitive in a way where you’re connected to the same wellspring of wisdom and knowledge, that all these ancient, traditional oracular methods tap into, through all their various cultural lenses and traditional methods." (Hosted by Justine Willis Toms)

Nicki Scully has been teaching the shamanic arts and Egyptian mysteries since 1983. She has written many books, including The Anubis Oracle: A Journey into the Shamanic Mysteries of Egypt (Bear & Company 2008), coauthored with Linda Star Wolf, and creator of the CD set Becoming an Oracle: Connecting to the Divine Source for Information and Healing (Sounds True 2009). YOUR ETERNAL BLISS with SWAMI KRIYANANDA
Program #3321 - Buy Now ($1.99/MP3 Download)
Full Program Description

Topics Explored in this Dialogue:
  • The true nature of God
  • What the goal of your life really is
  • How you can find a way to love people who do terrible things
  • How a spiritual community can support your spiritual practice
  • How you can find the right spiritual path for you

For more than sixty years Swami Kriyananda has been a disciple of the revered Paramhansa Yogananda. As a young man the Swami came to understand that logic and intellect would never lead to happiness, and with his first encounter with Yogananda knew he had found his true spiritual path. Now he shares personal stories of the great teacher's wisdom, humility, and humor, and offers insights each of us can use to find the love and bliss that are available to us all.

He explains, "Everybody wants two things in this universe: one, to escape pain, and the other to find happiness. The happiness that they're seeking is a little glimpse of the bliss of their own being. The goal of life is to know bliss. The bliss, when you find it, is so intense that nothing else matters to you. And you know that you'll have that bliss for all eternity and never get tired of it." This fascinating conversation is an opportunity to experience the presence of a man who emanates the energy of bliss and love—just listening will help you recognize your own.

Swami Kriyananda is beloved throughout the world as a yogic teacher, and is founder of Ananda, a network successful of spiritual communities. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Beacon of Light Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the National Interfaith Council and the International Award for Goodness presented by Tara Gandhi, granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi. He is the author of several books including Conversations with Yogananda (Crystal Clarity 2004) and A New Path: My Life with Parahamsa Yogananda (Crystal Clarity 2009). Do You Love Movies?

Spiritual Cinema CircleMichael and I love to watch movies. It is a magical art-form. They inform, inspire, and touch the heart and soul in so many ways.

Did you know that many visionary, soulful movies are made every year but never get into the theaters? Independent, spiritual filmmakers are creating movies with heart and soul, movies that really matter. Until now, though, hardly anybody got to see them.

Spiritual Cinema Circle® is a DVD club that sends out 4 features and short films in the mail each month on DVD. You keep the DVDs. The movies you get are full-length features, both dramas and comedies, short films, and documentaries on mind-opening subjects. They are about many different subjects, but they all share common elements: All our movies are carefully-chosen to provide genuine nourishment for the heart and soul, a much-needed nutrient at a time when more and more Hollywood movies are violent, profane and devoid of meaning. These movies inspire wonder, insight, deep feeling and transcendence. Above all, they make you feel better about being a human being.
