COMMUNICATING THE WISDOM THAT'S CHANGING THE WORLD
|
||||||||||||
Every morning following my meditation practice, I'll read from a selection of books that are piled precariously on a table beside my chair. They represent my diverse and eclectic taste. Some are poetry: Rumi, Rilke, Mary Oliver. Others are inspirational. And then there are some that are quirky, and just plain fun, as they lightheartedly deliver kernels of truth. Currently, I've been savoring one such book. It is a book of short essays, I'll Ask You Three Times, Are You OK? Tales of Driving and Being Driven (Greenwillow Press 2007) by Naomi Shihab Nye. She is a poet, essayist, and novelist of some repute. Some of you will remember a recent New Dimensions program with guest Kim Rosen (#3317), that featured one of Nye's poems, Kindness. This book recounts her experiences traveling in automobiles to places around the world—and the things she learned from the people in the cars with her. Some are funny, some heartbreaking: The kind taxis drivers, the grumpy ones, and the one from her ancestral home of Lebanon. I highly recommend you taking a ride with Naomi, as she takes us around the world sharing her observations, stories, encounters, and escapades..

Does your doctor gather with other doctors to sit with you in a healing circle to discuss your needs? Probably not. If the standard of care you're accustomed to is considerably more sterile than that, you'll be heartened to hear Dr. Len Saputo talk about his vision—and practice—of healing as it should be. In his view, modern medicine falls tragically short because, "What's important is not so much what you do to a person, in terms of the biochemistry and physiology. It's looking at the deeper essence of who they are and what went wrong in their life, or what led to the body needing to show back to the person that there was something wrong." This deeply holistic approach is what each of us is longing for. But even if you're unable to be treated by Dr. Saputo or his wife, nurse Vicki Saputo, they have recommendations for how you can take charge of your own health through simple lifestyle choices—and by knowing when it's time to call on the big guns of conventional medicine. As this caring partnership tells us, "We have to have a return to healing, and that's about community and love and connecting. It's about sharing and giving." Len Saputo, M.D., is board certified in internal medicine. He and his wife, Vicki Saputo, R.N., are co-founders of the Health Medicine Forum and the Health Medicine Center in Walnut Creek, California, a pioneering center for integral medicine. Dr. Saputo is author of Boosting Immunity: Creating Wellness Naturally (New World Library 2002) and co-author with Byron Belitsos of A Return to Healing: Radical Health Care Reform and the Future of Medicine (Origin Press 2009). We live in challenging times. Beyond life's typical ups and downs, there seems to be an overabundance of obstacles each of us must overcome. At times the stress feels overwhelming, and we struggle to find the balance we desperately need to get through it all. In this conversation with beloved teacher and healer Joan Borysenko, she turns her wise attention to how you can develop the resilience to stay on course no matter what life throws your way. She explains, "Resilience is that recognition that it's not the end of the world. Furthermore, resilience is more than just bouncing back from the stress, like losing your house or losing your money. It's an innate transformation, for example understanding that happiness is an inside job." She'll guide you through the warning signs of pessimism and the pitfalls of optimism, and offer up a wealth of suggestions for how you can develop what she calls "stress-hardiness"—to handle all of life's challenges with resilience, equanimity, and inner peace. Joan Borysenko, Ph.D., holds a doctorate in medical sciences from Harvard Medical School, and has completed post-doctoral fellowships in behavioral sciences and psychoneuroimmunology. She is a pioneer in integrative medicine and a world-renowned expert in the mind-body connection. She is a journalist, host of her own radio show, and bestselling author of fourteen books including It's Not the End of the World: Developing Resilience in Times of Change (Hay House 2009). Gerald Rosen has seen America from most every vantage point. He grew up in a house without books, obtained an ivy league Ph.D. in literature, and went on to run a liquor store on the edge of Harlem. He's crossed paths in one way or another with Miles Davis, Jack Kerouac, Janis Joplin…even Babe Ruth. So his observations about American culture carry his own particular brand of authenticity. And what he sees has him a little concerned. "We each of us are born into this culture, so we start getting in a sense hypnotized the day we're born," he notes. "So we're Americans—we walk like Americans, we talk like Americans. This is our social inheritance. But this culture, it's not working for us. There's something missing. There's some hunger, some dryness, some hollowness to our culture." How we got to that place of hollowness, and how we can begin to fill it, is the subject of this provocative interview with this very American author. Gerald Rosen, Ph.D., holds a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania in American history and literature. He has been called a "master of comedy" and a "poet of the one-liner." His books include Blues for a Dying Nation (Dial Press 1972), Growing Up Bronx (North Atlantic Books 1984) and Cold Eye, Warm Heart: A Novelist's Search for Meaning (Calm Unity Press 2009). Not too long ago neuroscientists believed we were born with an assigned number of brain cells, and as they died they were never replaced—we were doomed to get along with ever decreasing cognitive abilities. But as Judith Horstman tells us, more current research tells us that our brains are constantly adapting to our experiences, and new neuronal pathways are being forged every minute. "The brain is very plastic," she says. "It changes in response to just about anything that affects our lives. The information is not so much stored in the neurons but in the circuits, and those circuits are affected by what we eat, what we drink, what we feel, what we think." In this fascinating interview Ms. Horstman shares the latest findings in brain research, and the exciting new developments just ahead. Best of all, because she’s not a scientist but a journalist she makes it easy for any of us to discover ways to make the most of our brain power. Judith Horstman is an award winning journalist who writes about health and medicine for doctors and the general public. She has been a Washington correspondent, a journalism professor, a Fulbright scholar, and has written and edited in diverse media including USA Today, Gannett News Service in Washington, D.C., and publications for Stanford, Harvard, and Johns Hopkins universities. She is the author of several books including The Arthritis Foundation’s Guide to Alternative Therapies (Arthritis Foundation 1999) and The Scientific American Day in the Life of Your Brain (Jossey-Bass 2009). Small Pleasures : Finding Grace in a Chaotic World by Justine Willis Toms THE WINNER OF 2009 Award in the Spiritual Books Category Small Pleasures: Finding Grace in a Chaotic World by Justine Toms Announced at the 13th Annual Awards Event of the Coalition of Visionary Resources |
Michael and I love to watch movies. It is a magical art-form. They inform, inspire, and touch the heart and soul in so many ways.
Did you know that many visionary, soulful movies are made every year but never get into the theaters? Independent, spiritual filmmakers are creating movies with heart and soul, movies that really matter. Until now, though, hardly anybody got to see them.
Spiritual Cinema Circle® is a DVD club that sends out 4 features and short films in the mail each month on DVD. You keep the DVDs. The movies you get are full-length features, both dramas and comedies, short films, and documentaries on mind-opening subjects. They are about many different subjects, but they all share common elements: All our movies are carefully-chosen to provide genuine nourishment for the heart and soul, a much-needed nutrient at a time when more and more Hollywood movies are violent, profane and devoid of meaning. These movies inspire wonder, insight, deep feeling and transcendence. Above all, they make you feel better about being a human being.
Consider joining Spiritual Cinema Circle by using the link below. You can start with a free trial.
