Going Shopping in Your Own Closet

by Justine Wills Toms

At last we are moving from winter to spring. Most of the snow is cleared away, the last of the rains (at least here in Northern, coastal California) have passed. It's time for me to exchange my winter sweaters for lighter linens and cottons. I feel a strong pull to go on a shopping spree, but in these tough economic times it just isn't feasible. Instead, I'm enjoying the pleasure of going shopping in my own closet. I consider finding new combinations to make up new outfits a creative act.

I open my closet in the morning and ask myself, what color do I feel like today? What texture will support me in my day? Do I feel flowy and light, or do I need something more substantial or tailored. Am I happy enough to carry off bright red? Or am a little subdued and feel like wearing blue? If I feel I need grounding I look for earth colors: greens, browns, and yellows. After picking out the basic outfit, I comb through my extensive selection of scarves. Scarves are not too expensive and can perk up any outfit (golly, I don't mean to sound like some sort of fashion consultant). But scarves satisfy my need for something new in my wardrobe. They can also form a kind of shield between me and the world when I'm feeling fragile and in need of protection. Then, I pick out some necklace or pendant, and earrings. Top that off with shoes and sometimes a hat.

Michael has his own version of this. Through the years he has collected a considerable array of baseball caps. Some make a statement about the environment, others represent some of his favorite sports teams (mostly baseball, and more particularly, the Giants), while still others reflect places he's traveled to and loved. They represent every color you can imagine, like the biggest box of Crayolas you've ever seen. I always look forward to seeing what cap he's going to be wearing each day. There are others, like our webmaster Chris, who collect tee shirts as a form of self-expression.

Some of us are fine artists who paint and draw, others work with clay. For me, dressing is an act that feeds my inner artist and feeds my sense of beauty. In a world gone mad, it is my little act of defiance, to not be beaten down by it all. It's a deeply nurturing process for me. It also clues me into my emotional weather. Am I stormy, or calm; am I joyful or sad? What are you wearing today? Does it truly reflect your heart today? You might want to dig deep in your own closet; you may be surprised by the gems you'll find.

THE TENDER BEAUTY OF AGING with ALICE & RICHARD MATZKIN
Program #3344 - Buy Now ($1.99/MP3 Download)
Full Program Description

Topics Explored in this Dialogue:
  • What the single most frightening thing is about aging
  • Why wrinkles and sagging skin really do have nothing to do with beauty—or a lack thereof
  • What qualities allow some people to age more gracefully than others
  • How you can become closer to the older people in your life
  • Why it's important to be with our elders

Alice and Richard Matzkin are aging lovers. She's seventy, he's sixty-six. They're also artists whose work truly is an expression of their lives. Most recently they've been applying their gifts to express the beauty—yes, the beauty—of aging, and they do it with the tenderness they've learned in their twenty-seven years of loving each other. Through their work they've discovered an unexpected joy when the body and spirit ripen to wisdom not available to the young.

As Richard sculpts a series of aging lovers, he revels in "The sweetness of older, mature love, that is like the comfort of an old shoe, if it's right. There are no pinches or calluses. It fits beautifully." As Alice paints women in their eighties and beyond, she finds a key to her own happiness. "The lines and the wrinkles and sagging skin is just the story of a person's years. It's just their history written on their face. It has nothing to do with real beauty, because I've found that the real beauty comes from –it sounds corny, but it's true—it's the light that shines within a person." With the insight of these two gifted artists, we may find that, if we're lucky, our lives can imitate their art. (Hosted by Justine Willis Toms)

Alice Matzkin has appeared on Oprah and her portraits have hung in the White House and in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian. Richard Matzkin has had numerous one-man shows, and his sculptures are in collections throughout the United States. They are co-authors of the Nautilus Award winning book, The Art of Aging: Celebrating the Authentic Aging Self (Sentient Publications 2009). WISDOM FOR A GLOBAL TRIBE with ALAN BRISKIN
Program #3342 - Buy Now ($1.99/MP3 Download)
Full Program Description

Topics Explored in this Dialogue:
  • How you can use both science and mystery in the service of wisdom
  • What practices your group can use to create the conditions for wisdom to arise
  • Why disagreement within a group can be the catalyst for deeper wisdom
  • How you can discern the impact of your decisions on generations to come
  • Why community is important in these times

In an uprising of collective wisdom in 2008, the American electorate upended the political paradigm to elect a President who stood for hope, change, and the ideals of a progressive agenda. Is there a way to identify the principles which allowed that process to unfold, and apply them to further the social change inherent in those ideals? Alan Briskin believes there is, and he has a deep reverence for the wisdom that can emerge when individuals come together for a common purpose, even—or especially—when those individuals bring divergent viewpoints to the table.

He sees it as a key to the evolution of a new way of relating to one another, as we face the imminent crises of our time, and most importantly, when we must work together in service to those who are not of our own tribe. He explains, "The collective wisdom suggests that we become mindful of our own behavior in groups, and that groups are the unit by which we can create change. So notions of suspending our uncertainty, notions of respect for others, for being patient with the dissonance we may feel with those we disagree with, become disciplines and practices of collective wisdom." His subtle but powerful message offers a blueprint for how we can create working relationships that optimize our ability to act wisely and effectively, "so that our children and grandchildren have a place that is inhabitable."

Alan Briskin is a pioneer in the field of organizational learning and cofounder of the Collective Wisdom Initiative. He is co-author of The Power of Collective Wisdom and the Trap of Collective Folly (Berrett-Koehler 2009). To learn more about the work of Alan Briskin go to www.ThePowerOfCollectiveWisdom.com

THE STORY OF YOUR SOUL with BRENDA PETERSON
Program #3343 - Buy Now ($1.99/MP3 Download)
Full Program Description

Topics Explored in this Dialogue:
  • The simple writing exercise that will help you discover the real meaning of your life
  • How humor can alter your story—and improve your negotiating position
  • Why your family may not be able to receive your love offerings
  • How you can find your own brand of "rapture" here on earth
  • Why everyone can write and tell a story

Chances are your life includes a few chapters where you've embarked on one or another approach to self-exploration—spiritual practice, therapy, self-help books or gurus. But have you tried getting to know yourself by writing your memoir? Brenda Peterson has, and in the process she's discovered a powerful tool for uncovering elements of your psyche that may have eluded every other attempt at self examination. It forces you to see your life from an entirely different perspective.

She explains, "Many people, because they need to survive, and need to achieve, are very perceptive about the world. But whether or not they know themselves—that's the question. And in memoir you're the main character, and the plot is the evolution of soul, or self. So you have to show up on the page. You can't just be watching everybody around you. You have to turn that eye back on yourself." Ms. Peterson freely shares the often startling personal discoveries she made along the way, and will inspire you to explore the untold story of you—and the inner hero, heroine, angel, or villain you have yet to meet. (Hosted by Justine Willis Toms)

Brenda Peterson is a novelist, nature writer, and writing teacher. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and O: The Oprah Magazine. She is the author of sixteen books, including Build Me an Arc: A Life with Animals (W. W. Norton 2001), chosen as Best Spiritual Book of 2001, and Duck and Cover (Backinprint.com 2004), a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. She's also the author of the spiritual memoir, I Want to Be Left Behind: Finding Rapture Here on Earth (Da Capo Press 2010). FINDING YOUR OWN INNER GURU with JEFF BROWN
Program #3340 - Buy Now ($1.99/MP3 Download)
Full Program Description

Topics Explored in this Dialogue:
  • Why you may need to nurture your roots before you reach for the sky
  • Why your emotional life is intricately woven into your spiritual growth
  • How you can find your own purpose in the context of being part of the universal Oneness
  • Why a guru's teaching may be more about his or her spiritual path than about yours
  • How to open your heart to wisdom

Everything about life—birth, family, emotions, inner voices, coincidences—is all part of the intricately woven tapestry of your spiritual path. Learning to see it as such, and to heed the lessons it offers, has led Jeff Brown to transition from working as a criminal attorney to a psychotherapist to a writer and soul-path teacher. Through it all he's gained an understanding of what it takes to find the courage to heal your emotional wounds, and let go of the expectations you've had for your life, so that your true life's purpose can emerge. However, he's the first to acknowledge how difficult it can be to embrace a soul-centered life.

He explains, "The more we postpone it, the more armored we are, disconnected from our center, the more it seems very frightening and uncomfortable to open up the emotional material, which often happens first. But if we want to live an authentic existence, we have to make the choice to start to create space for that in our world. We have to. Otherwise we have truth-aches. We have various symptoms of agitation and discomfort and frustration –or sickness. It just seems easier to start surrendering to it, than to go through what you'll go through if you keep ignoring it." He's been there, and he can help you discover the wealth of teaching you already hold in your heart.

Jeff Brown holds an M.A. in psychology from Saybrook Institute and is co-founder of the Open Heart Gang, whose first "act of gratitude" is a documentary about the life of Bhagavan Das. He is the author of Soulshaping: A Journey of Self-Creation (North Atlantic Books 2009). To learn more about the work of Jeff Brown go to www.SoulShaping.com

Thomas and the Rainbow: Maire (Connie Nielsen) transforms an orphan boy’s world when she brings him to live in her small island village, off the coast of Ireland. Her reticent husband Alec (Aidan Quinn) can barely hide his disappointment when he meets the frail, shy eight-year-old. Undiscouraged, Maire introduces Thomas (John Bell) to the wonders of his new world, and shows him that you can find magic anywhere — if you really look.

Act As If: One woman’s secret to winning at life is to “act as if,” which transforms her from a feisty blue-collar Boston kid into Harvard’s championship basketball coach. Kathy Delaney-Smith inspires on and off the court, demonstrating the power of the mind to overcome any obstacle, including her own life-threatening illness in this engaging documentary.
