If You Love New Dimensions, Pledge to Your Favorite Station by Jim Williams
Chances are your local public and community
radio station is or will be entering
its Spring Pledge Drive. We all know
this is the time when it seems there are
more appeals for you to give money than
there is programming on the air. Of course,
that’s not really true. It’s just that those of us who listen to
publicly supported radio stations are reminded what commercial
radio station audiences have to endure every day.
The cost of no commercials is pledge drives. The concept
is simple. Radio may have free listening, but it’s not free
to produce or broadcast a program. Instead of selling air
time to businesses and corporations so they can try to sell
you stuff, publicly supported radio stations rely on listeners
to voluntarily become members or make donations in
order to pay the bills. We at New Dimensions believe passionately
in the value of public radio. We also realize the
amount of pressure public, and especially community,
radio stations are under. An equally unfortunate reality
these days is more and more stations pay attention to what
programs bring in the most money during the pledge drives.
Stations equate amount of financial contribution to
popularity and viability. When stations drop New
Dimensions there are two reasons most often given, 1) "We
are changing the predominant type of programming we are going
to play", or 2) "Frankly, you’re not holding your own" – meaning
not enough money is coming in during pledge drives.
So that’s why we say, and mean it very literally and sincerely,
when stations hold their pledge drives, "Please call
and make a pledge." If you can, call when New Dimensions is
aired. If you can’t call then, please remember to mention
New Dimensions when you do call.
Remember if you love New Dimensions,
pledge to the station that carries us.
