Listener Responsible for Getting New Dimensions on her Local Station

In August of last year, we received an email from a New Dimensions’ supporter telling us that a new, low-powered FM station was starting up in her town of Moscow, Idaho. She wanted to know what would have to happen for KRFP – Radio Free Moscow to broadcast New Dimensions.

We sent her the information that radio stations need to make programming decisions and then we contacted the station telling them of their listener’s interest. Within a week the station contacted us to get more information. Folks, that’s record-breaking time! It often takes several months of phone calls to get a response from stations and even then there is no guarantee you will get though to the program director. To get a call back in a week – well five days actually – is absolutely remarkable. It took the usual 3-6 months to wait for a place in their schedule to open up - meantime the station and I remained in contact. In February of 2006 we were on the schedule.

What’s particularly gratifying about this story, from our point of view, is it all began with a New Dimensions listener who took the initiative to contact us and then followed up by contacting her local station. Radio stations expect us to tell them our program is fantastic and they should add it to their schedule; when a listener and potential supporter tells them it adds tremendous credibility and can be very influential. In this case things happened quickly, sometimes it takes longer and sometimes the station decides not to pick us up, but I guarantee that when one of our listeners takes the time to contact a station it always leaves an impression and it keeps the door a little more open than if we call cold.
