Home From NFCB by Jim Williams
Once a year a contingent from New Dimensions attends the annual meeting of the National Federation of
Community Broadcasters – NFCB for short. The conference roams across the country. Last year we were in
Baltimore, this year Portland, Oregon. The NFCB gathering is a lot like a family reunion for us. We know
many of the folks who attend, and look forward to visiting with them and sharing the stories of the past year.
And we always have the thrill of meeting new cousins of the community radio family. This year was no exception.
The weather in Portland was exquisite and the information exchanged valuable. The consolidated Native American tribes
along the amazing Columbia River and the community radio stations they operate - like KWSO in Warm Springs, OR - hosted
the opening reception and gifted us with smoked salmon and information about their history and culture. We heard how community
radio stations across the country came to the aid of WWOZ in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina took down the station.
We were treated to the generous hospitality of Portland’s own community radio station, KBOO, and met many of the varied
and colorful programmers who combine to offer an amazingly eclectic collection of locally produced programs for the Portland
audience.
As I said, we met members of the family – the family of New Dimensions Affiliate Stations. This year we were thrilled to
greet several of the members of KZFR – People Powered Radio out of Chico, CA serving the northern Sacramento Valley. KZFR
began broadcasting on July 6, 1990. They picked up New Dimensions in 1996 and are big New Dimensions’ fans. Their Office
Manager, Stacey Wear could be the organizer of a New Dimensions’ Fan club. She recently sent us this "As a staff member at a
local community radio station, I know how much New Dimensions means to us. I see its popularity reflected during our pledge drives,
and hear how important it is in conversations I've had with our listeners. It is solid, positive and informative programming
that I don't believe ANY station should be without! I love New Dimensions!"
If you ever find yourself driving up Interstate 5 from Sacramento, CA to Oregon be sure to tune into KZFR 90.1 FM Who knows
in addition to New Dimensions you might be lucky enough to catch WONKA Radio, Mangia With The Momas or The Dinosaur
Hour.
New Dimensions’ fans take note of Stacey’s reference to the responsiveness of New Dimensions’ listeners to
KZFR’s Pledge Drive. The station exceeded its fund raising goal this spring and so we say, "Congratulations,
KZFR" and "Thanks New Dimensions’ listeners for doing your part!"
