August Notes
by Jim Williams

This month I am excited to tell you about New Dimensions’ Boulder, Colorado Affiliate Station - Independent Community Radio KGNU. KGNU began as a result of a class on ‘how to start your own radio station’ offered in 1975 by the Boulder Free School. Three years later they received their license from the FCC and their first broadcast, originating from a cabana in a local downtown hotel, was heard. Later they occupied a space above a diner and then moved to a converted dental office. In 2001 they moved into their new home on Walnut Street, a facility designed and built for radio production and broadcast.

People can almost always easily tell the difference between commercial radio and public radio. The distinction between public radio and community radio is less obvious however. Community radio is characterized by a philosophy of respect, dedication and commitment to the unique character of a station’s community with an operational style and programming priorities that reflect that philosophy. My test is when I am listening to a radio station, can I tell where I am and what the community is like, or am I listening to programming I could hear anywhere in the country. It’s the difference between shopping in a vibrant downtown of locally owned businesses and shopping in a mall no different from any mall anywhere in the country. KGNU is a community radio station in all the best meanings and nuances of that term. Station Program Director, Sam Fuqua, proudly and justifiably asserts, "All of our programming reflects the Boulder community." From their truly free form music programming, to programs like Metro, Four Your Health, the monthly youth program Overdub, and the weekly program Hmong Colorado, KGNU programming offers a diverse, eclectic mixture of local and national programming. New Dimensions is heard Sunday mornings at 11 am on KGNU and we couldn’t be prouder to be a part of their programming line-up.

You can hear KGNU on it’s FM frequency of 88.5 or, on the AM dial, you can listen at 1390, a signal that reaches all the way to Denver. There’s even better news! Anyone can tune in on-line from anywhere in the world by going to kgnu.org and clicking on the listen button. While you’re listening take time to browse their delightful website and BE SURE to visit the prairie dog art exhibit one of the most delightful fun/d raisers I’ve seen in a long time. If you listen to New Dimensions on KGNU, then mark your calendar now. The station’s pledge drive will be the first week in October. Take advantage of that opportunity to let KGNU know how much you appreciate them for carrying New Dimensions and being so dedicated to upholding the principles of community radio – for you. This gem of a station deserves your support.
